READINGBut who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire…From Malachi 3
REFLECTIONAt Christmas our sentiment is typically not “Who can stand when he appears…He is like a refiner's fire”. Think about the songs we sing, we are more meek and mild and gentle. Sometimes we forget the epic, reality shifting, darkness breaking apart that happens in the story we’re remembering of the story we are remembering. So again we pray today, “Come Lord Jesus” to our broken world.
PREPARATIONAbba, in your Spirit,Let the word of Christ dwell in us,Richly.
THE SONG OF ZECHARIAH WITH RESPONSEBlessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,For he has visited and redeemed his people;And has raised up a horn of salvation for usIn the house of his servant DavidAs he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophetsWho have been from of old,Salvation from our enemies,And from the hand of all who hate us;
RESPONSEAbba,Let it be on earth as in heaven.You have our allegiance,You have our obedience,Let your kingdom come,Let your will be done.
To show mercy towards our fathers,To remember his holy covenant,The oath which he swore to Abraham, our father,To grant to us that we,being delivered out of the hand of our enemies,should serve him without fear,In holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life.
Because of the tender mercy of our God,Whereby the dawn from on high will visit us,To shine on those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death;To guide our feet into the way of peace.
RESPONSEYou are tender and mercifulYou are Immanuel.A warm light, a new day.From Luke 1
Psalm 113Praise the Lord.Praise, all you servants of the Lord,Praise the name of the Lord.Blessed be the name of the LordFrom this time forth and forevermore.From the rising of the sunTo the going down of the sameThe name of the Lord is to be praised.
The Lord is high above all nations,And his glory above the heavens.Who is like the Lord our God,Who has his seat on high,That humbles himself to beholdThe things that are in heaven And in the earth?
He raises up the poor out of the dust,And lifts up the needy from the pile of ashesThat he may set him with princes,Even with the princes of his people.He makes the barren woman a home,And to be a joyful mother of children.Praise the Lord.
SHEMA & THE JESUS CREEDHear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your might. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.
